Like many others, you may be seeking to buy psilocybin mushrooms or truffles. This guide presents you with sourcing options, while giving an overview of the legal situation in different countries.
Please remember that psilocybin is illegal and highly controlled in most parts of the world. You are responsible for any risks you take.
A few countries have decriminalized or legalized the cultivation, possession, and/or use of psilocybin. Some do not enforce existing laws regarding psilocybin.

For some people, the safest way to access psilocybin is through a clinical trial. However, most of these studies receive an overwhelming number of applicants and employ stringent selection criteria. So the chances of your being able to participate are low.
If you have enough resources, plenty of retreat centers, tripsitters, and other licensed professionals are willing to guide you on your mushroom journey. Some may only offer support during the preparation or integration phases, while others may be available to guide you throughout the entire process.

You can find mushrooms by networking and asking around. As psychedelics gain wider mainstream acceptance, you may notice more people are open to discussing the topic.
Sometimes, asking a question like "have you ever tried microdosing?" or "have you heard of psilocybin?" can open up doors.
Of course, it may be best to build trust with someone before asking these questions. Open-mindedness, kindness, and brightness are some traits to look for when you want to bring up this sensitive topic.
As always, be mindful of your setting, especially in jurisdictions where psilocybin is illegal and stigmatized.

In the United States, psilocybin mushrooms along with most other psychoactive substances are still prohibited under federal law.
However, there have been some major legal victories for psilocybin at the city, county, and state levels.
In 2019, the city of Denver, Colorado was the first to decriminalize magic mushrooms.
As of March 2026, three states -- Oregon, Colorado, and New Mexico -- have programs allowing regulated use of psilocybin.
There have also been several cities or counties that have either decriminalized psychedelics or deprioritized enforcement of laws prohibiting them. These include:

Some psychedelic guides aren't waiting for laws to change, and have started churches or other religious organizations where they share sacrament with their congregation. Many believe the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 protects them. Here are a few examples:

In the Netherlands, magic truffles, the underground part of some magic mushrooms, are legal and openly sold in physical and online “smartshops.”
Unfortunately, magic mushrooms were banned in 2008 after a young woman died after jumping from a bridge while under the influence of multiple substances (including alcohol).
Luckily, magic truffles were excluded from the list of prohibited substances and continue to grow in popularity. Through another legal loophole, several companies continue to produce and distribute magic mushroom grow kits, which are legal because the kits themselves do not contain psilocybin.
Listed below are some physical smartshops. Amsterdam has the highest concentration of these businesses, but in most major Dutch cities, you’ll be able to find a store that sells truffles. Some of these smartshops also sell products through their websites.

Several online-only smart shops based in the Netherlands sell truffles and grow kits (sometimes alongside other products). Some only ship within the Netherlands while others ship overseas. Here are just a few examples:
In Canada, psilocybin is illegal on the national level. Alberta has established a regulated medical program for psychedelic-assisted therapy.
There are many grey market online and physical dispensaries that offer magic mushrooms.
The majority of brick and mortar shops are located in Vancouver and Toronto. This 2023 article listed physical dispensaries in Canada.
The Medicinal Mushroom Dispensary, started by Dana Larsen, a veteran Canadian cannabis advocate, was one of the first Canadian online shops.

Many online originally-cannabis-only dispensaries are now expanding their product lines to include psilocybin mushrooms. Most of these web shops only ship within Canada, although there are a few that ship overseas. For a more complete view of the Canadian market, visit Psillow.
In Jamaica, psilocybin mushrooms are completely legal. If you are in the country doing research, you may want to ask around for Tedd’s or Miss Brown’s.
As in the Netherlands, there are also several established retreats in Jamaica that may be able to help with your requests. You can explore your options through a search engine or through the Tripsitters Directory or retreat.guru.
(Important note: in 2006, Time magazine named Jamaica “the most homophopic place on Earth,” and if you identify as LGBTQIA+, you may want to conduct research in other places.)
In Nepal, magic mushrooms are a completely uncontrolled substance.
In Brazil, even though psilocybin and psilocin (another psychoactive compound in magic mushrooms) are technically illegal, it is still legal to possess, consume, and sell magic mushrooms.
In the British Virgin Islands (in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico), magic mushrooms grow naturally and are legal to possess and to consume. Although it remains illegal to sell or market the fungi, these laws remain unenforced. The Tortola island in particular is known for the many small businesses that openly sell magic mushrooms.
Portugal decriminalized all substances for personal use and possession in 2001.
Spain has decriminalized personal use of psilocybin in a private space, and plant medicine thrives in some parts of the country (e.g. Ibiza and Mallorca).
Mexico allows mushrooms if they are used as part of a religious ceremony, and there are several organizations offering mushroom retreats. Specifically, in Oaxaca, Mexico, home to the late Maria Sabina (the famous mushroom curandera), you will find many people offering mushrooms and ceremonies. Within Oaxaca, San Jose del Pacifico is the most well-known mushroom haven.
In certain parts of Thailand (e.g. Pai, Phuket, Koh Pha Ngan), mushrooms are widely available although they are technically illegal.
Psilocybin mushrooms are also openly sold on Gili Air, Indonesia, an island right next to Bali, but this option may not be advised as the consequences of being caught with illegal substances in Indonesia are severe.
In Laos, some restaurants offer a special menu of magic shakes, teas, and pizza. As always, please take extreme caution and conduct extensive research as you explore these options to remain safe and free. We do not recommend breaking any laws.
In parts of Costa Rica, psilocybin is de facto decriminalized. They can be found in stores and farmer's markets.
